Description

87 John Street in Stromness is a mid to later 19th century house that has undergone some alterations. It is a two-storey and attic building with a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan. There is a low single-storey outbuilding that projects to the right (north). The exterior is harled with plain cement margins around the openings.

On the east (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set architraved timber panelled door at ground level in the central bay, with a boot-scrape recess to the left. Above this door, there is a window on the first floor. The ground floor features boarded windows, while the first floor has a window in the bays on either side.

The north (side) elevation includes the single-storey outbuilding, which is offset to the left of the centre. There is an attic window offset to the right of the gable, with a gablehead stack above. The windows throughout the building are 6-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered in grey slate with a stone ridge, and there are two evenly spaced rooflights on the east pitch. The gablehead stacks on the north and south sides are harled and corniced, and the building has uPVC gutters and cast-iron downpipes.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.

The outbuilding is constructed of harl-pointed rubble and features a boarded door at the centre and another to the outer left. It has a graded Caithness slate roof with a stone ridge and cast-iron rainwater goods.

Additionally, there is a rubble boundary wall that encloses a rectangular garden on steeply rising ground to the west (rear).
