6 Melvin Place, Stromness

6 Melvin Place in Stromness is a late 18th to early 19th century house that has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey and attic, two-bay rectangular-plan asymmetrical gable-ended structure. The exterior is made of roughly coursed rubble with concrete window cills.

On the east (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set boarded door at ground level in the left bay, with a window above it on the first floor. The right bay features a window on each floor and a small attic window above. A gablehead stack is located above.

The north (side) elevation has a part-glazed timber panelled door in the left bay, with a window above it on the first floor. There is also a window at ground level in the right bay, and a shed dormer above.

The house features four- and twelve-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with Caithness slates, and there are stone skews with cavetto moulded skewputts. The gablehead stack is corniced and harled, and the property has cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
