Description
4 Melvin Place is a house built in the earlier to mid 19th century, with later alterations and additions. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay rectangular-plan symmetrical house featuring a single-storey lean-to addition that spans the bays to the right at the rear, which adjoins a gable-ended house to the north. The exterior is harled with cement margins around the openings, and the first-floor windows are positioned close to the eaves.
On the east (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set architraved modern timber door located in the central bay at ground level, with a boot-scrape recess to the left. Above the door is a raised ashlar star panel, and there is a window on the first floor. Each bay has a window at both the ground and first floors.
The west (rear) elevation features the lean-to addition at ground level in the bays to the right, with a window at the first floor above the centre. There is also a stair window on the outer left.
On the south (side) elevation, there is a window at each floor in the gabled bay to the right, with a gablehead stack above. To the outer left, there is a modern door with a window in the lean-to addition.
The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a Caithness slate roof with a stone ridge, asbestos on the addition, cement skews, an extended harled gablehead stack to the south, a tall gablehead stack to the north, and uPVC rainwater goods.
Inside, the house features architraved timber panelled doors, timber skirting boards, decorative wrought-iron banisters, and a timber handrail.
