Description
2 Melvin Place in Stromness is a later 18th century house that has undergone some alterations. It is a two-storey and attic building with a single bay and a square plan, located at the center of a small square. There is a single-storey lean-to bathroom extension on the east side, which is made of harl-pointed rubble.
On the north elevation, the entrance features a timber panelled door set to the left at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. The lean-to addition to the left has a blank elevation. The west elevation is also blank. The south elevation has a window set to the left at ground level and another window above it on the first floor. The east elevation includes a centrally located window at ground level and a window above it on the first floor, with an additional window in the lean-to addition on the right.
The house features 12- and 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is made of old Orkney Grey slate with a stone ridge, rooflights on the east and west pitches, stone skews, and a rubble corniced multi-flue gablehead stack on the south side. The rainwater goods are made of uPVC.
Inside, there are architraved timber panelled doors, timber skirtings, and a spiral timber staircase with timber banisters, handrails, and newel posts. The attic features a painted cast-iron handrail.
The property is enclosed by boundary walls, gatepiers, and railings. The gatepiers are square-plan rubble with stepped rubble caps and flank a timber gate in the garden wall to the south. There are low sections of rubble wall with painted wrought-iron railings, and a high rubble wall with a rounded rubble cope that encloses a rectangular garden to the southeast. Additionally, there is a fluted cast-iron lamp standard located within the wall at the southeast angle.
