Description
4 Hellihole Road in Stromness is a house built in the earlier to mid 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan structure that is symmetrical and situated on rising ground to the west. The exterior is harled and features painted cement margins around the openings. The first-floor windows are positioned close to the eaves. There is a flat-roofed L-plan outbuilding at the southeast corner and a pitched concrete garage at the rear, topped with a corrugated-iron roof.
On the north (principal) elevation, there is a modern timber door located in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays contains a window on both floors.
The south (rear) elevation features a high-set stair light in the central bay. There is a window at ground level and another window located towards the centre on the first floor in the flanking bays.
The west (side) elevation has a blank gabled wall with a gablehead stack. The house includes two-pane timber sash and case windows, as well as a fixed timber-framed stair light. The roof is covered with purple Welsh slate and has a stone ridge, with concrete skews to the east. The gablehead stacks to the east and west are harled and corniced, and the east stack has thackstanes. The property also has uPVC rainwater goods. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
