Description
27 Dundas Street in Stromness is a house built in the earlier to mid-19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan structure with an asymmetrical design and a crow-stepped gable on the west side. The house is situated next to a three-storey, three-bay house to the east and is built on rising ground to the west. The exterior features re-pointed coursed rubble. There is a coal shed located across the close to the south and a garden on terraced ground to the west.
The south elevation, which is the principal facade, has a part-glazed boarded door in the central bay at ground level, with a small non-aligned window above it on the first floor. There is a window on each floor in the bay to the right, while the bay to the left has a window at ground level and a non-aligned window above on the first floor.
The west side elevation features a blank crow-stepped gabled wall with a gablehead stack. The house has four-pane timber sash and case windows, a Caithness slate roof with a stone ridge, small evenly spaced rooflights, and harled, coped stacks on the east and west sides. The downpipes are made of cast iron, with uPVC gutters.
The interior was not seen in 1997. There is an outbuilding and a walled garden, which includes a rubble lean-to coal shed to the south, accessed through a boarded door in the boundary wall. The garden to the west at the rear is enclosed by a roughly coursed rubble wall with a rubble cope.
