Description
5 Dundas Street in Stromness is a house built in the earlier to mid 19th century. It is a two-storey building with an attic and has a four-bay rectangular plan that is asymmetrical. The house features a crow-stepped gable facing the street and is adjacent to a two-storey, three-bay house to the west (No 7) and another two-storey, three-bay house to the north (No 1). The exterior is harled.
On the southern elevation, which is the principal facade, there is a deep-set, part-glazed, timber panelled door located in the central bay. To the right, there is a window on each floor, with a three-light dormer window above. A window is present in the left bay at ground level, and there is a high-set stair window in the outer left bay, with another three-light dormer window above it.
The eastern elevation, facing Dundas Street, has a two-bay crow-stepped gable. There is a window offset to the right of centre at ground level, and a non-aligned window on the first floor. A small window is located to the left of the gable, which has a gablehead stack above it.
The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case style, and there is a fixed timber-framed stair light. The roof is covered with purple Welsh slate, with slate used on the piended dormers. The stacks are coped and harled, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not fully seen in 1997, but it features decorative cast-iron sugar-twist banisters and a timber handrail.
