Description
Ardenlea is a mid to later 19th-century house located at 43 Graham Place in Stromness. It is a two-storey building with an attic and has a symmetrical, three-bay rectangular plan. The structure is built from harl-pointed, roughly coursed rubble and features an eaves course. The openings have rubble margins, and the windows have concrete sills, with the first-floor windows positioned close to the eaves.
On the north elevation, which is the principal front, there is a modern timber panelled door with an inscribed fanlight in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay has a window on both floors flanking the central entrance. The south elevation, or rear, has a window in each bay on the first floor, with an additional window set between at ground level.
The west side elevation features a two-bay gabled wall, with a window at ground level and another at the first floor in the right bay. There is an attic window in the left bay, with a gablehead stack above. The house has six-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a stone ridge, and two evenly spaced rooflights on each pitch. The skews are made of concrete, and there are rubble, corniced gablehead stacks on both the east and west sides, along with uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997. The boundary walls consist of rubble walls with a rubble cope along the northern and western boundaries.
