Description
Hillside is a house located in Old Town, Ayton, dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions and alterations. It is a symmetrical, two-storey building with an attic and three bays, situated on a slope and forming the end of a terrace. The front is finished with painted harl, while the sides are made of harl-pointed sandstone rubble.
The southeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, features a centrally located timber panelled door with a bat-wing fanlight above it. This door is framed by a round-arched, keystoned door-surround. Above the door, there is a single window at the first floor beneath a tympany gable at the wallhead, which has a stack. Both flanking bays contain single windows on each floor, and there are sunk catslide dormers aligned above them.
On the northeast side elevation, there is a single window at the first floor, offset to the right of centre. The northwest rear elevation was not visible in 1998.
The front of the house has 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, although some modern plate glass windows and modern dormers have been added. The roof is covered with grey slate and features stone-coped skews. There are brick-built apex stacks with various circular cans, and a coped sandstone stack surmounts the pediment with a single can.
The interior was not seen in 1998. Additionally, there is a boundary wall made of heavily-pointed coped rubble that partially encloses the site at the front.
