Description

7 High Street in Ayton is a late 18th century building with later alterations. It is a two-storey, five-bay rectangular structure, arranged in a 2-3 grouping. The exterior is made of harl-pointed sandstone rubble with painted margins and projecting cills.

The northeast entrance elevation features No. 7 on the left, which has a centrally located two-leaf flush timber panelled door at ground level, flanked by former shop windows with chamfered surrounds. Above, there are single windows aligned at the first floor. To the right is No. 9, which has a part-glazed timber panelled door also centered at ground level, with an opaque fanlight above and a plain surround with a consoled cornice. This section also has a single window aligned at the first floor and additional single windows in the flanking bays on both floors.

On the southwest rear elevation, there is a lean-to addition offset to the left of center, with various openings to the right.

The building predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, although the former shop windows have modern glazing. The roof is continuous and covered with pantiles, with a grey slate easing course, stone-coped skews, and brick-built ridge and apex stacks with various circular cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

The interiors were not seen in 1998.
