Description

Summerhill is an early 19th century house with later additions and alterations, located in Beanburn, Ayton. It is a symmetrical, 2-storey, 3-bay plain classical house with a lower, 2-storey wing at the rear, creating a near T-plan. The exterior is constructed from heavily-pointed pink sandstone rubble, accented with cream sandstone dressings, eaves course, droved quoins, and droved long and short surrounds to openings, along with sandstone margins and projecting cills. There is also a single storey with an attic, rectangular-plan former coach house to the northwest.

The southeast elevation features a deep-set timber panelled door at the center of the ground floor, topped by a round-arched decorative fanlight with a stylised radial design and a round-arched, keystoned door-surround. There is a single window centered on the first floor and additional windows on both floors in the flanking bays.

On the southwest side elevation, there is a blind elevation to the right, while the lower, 2-bay wing is recessed to the left, featuring a timber panelled door to the right and a single window at ground level to the left, with another single window centered on the first floor.

The northwest rear elevation was not visible in 1998. The northeast side elevation shows the main block to the left with single windows on both floors in the outer left bay, and the lower, 2-storey wing recessed to the right.

The windows throughout the building have 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with wallhead stacks to the southwest and northeast, along with various circular and octagonal chimney cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

The interior of the house was not seen in 1998. The former coach house, made of heavily-pointed sandstone rubble with rubble dressings, features a southeast entrance elevation with a large, 2-leaf boarded timber door at the center and a boarded timber opening above. It also has a grey slate piended roof, and its interior was not seen in 1998.
