Description
Moffat House, located at 1 High Street in Ayton, is a late 18th-century house with later additions and alterations. It is a symmetrical two-storey building with a basement and wallhead attic, featuring three bays and forming the end of a terrace. The front is constructed of harl-pointed whinstone rubble, while the rear is painted harl, and the sides are harled. It has cream sandstone dressings, an eaves course, droved quoins, and droved long and short surrounds to the openings, along with projecting cills.
On the northeast (entrance) elevation, there are steps leading to a deep-set timber panelled door, which is centrally positioned at ground level and topped with a 3-pane fanlight and a corniced door surround. There are squat basement openings in the bays flanking the entrance, with single windows aligned at ground level and in all bays on the first floor, as well as squat attic openings above.
The southeast (side) elevation is blind. The southwest (rear) elevation features a stair window at the centre and is irregularly fenestrated in the remaining bays, with gabled dormers breaking the eaves on the outer left and right.
The house predominantly has 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, with 2- and 3-pane squat windows at the front. The roof is covered with grey slate and has stone-coped skews. There is a rendered apex stack on the southeast side and a brick-built apex stack on the northwest side, along with various circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
