Description
Garmisgarth is an early to earlier 19th century, two-storey, three-bay symmetrical L-plan house located on Mill Street in Kirkwall. The exterior features harled walls with re-pointed squared rubble on the sides and rear, and the first-floor windows are positioned close to the eaves.
On the southeast (principal) elevation, there is a timber panelled door with a letterbox fanlight in the central bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays has a window on both floors. To the outer left, there is a lean-to at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor.
The northeast (side) elevation has two bays, with a gabled bay on the left. There is a window at each floor in the left bay, with a gablehead stack above. The right bay has a window on the first floor, also set to the left.
The house predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a stone ridge, and a harled, corniced gablehead stack on the north gable, while the south gable has a rubble corniced gablehead stack. The rainwater goods are predominantly uPVC.
The interior was not seen during the inspection in 1998. The property is enclosed by a low harled boundary wall with a concrete cope on the southeast elevation, and there are rubble walls surrounding a rectangular-plan garden to the east.
