6 School Place, Kirkwall

6 School Place in Kirkwall is a cottage dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, with later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan building with a symmetrical design and crowstep gables, located at the northern end of a similarly dated small terrace on rising ground to the south. The cottage features two-storey and single-storey additions at the rear, forming an L-shape, and is harled with windows positioned close under the eaves.

On the west (principal) elevation, there is a window that was formerly a door in the central bay, with a window in each floor of the flanking bays. The north (side) elevation includes a two-storey, three-bay block at the center, with a door on the outer left and a window in each floor of the remaining bays. To the outer left, there is a single-storey, lean-to three-bay addition with a window in each bay. The main cottage on the right has a two-storey, single-bay gabled block with a window in each floor, set to the right, and a gablehead stack above.

The south elevation adjoins Number 8, which is listed separately. The cottage features four- and eight-pane timber sash and case windows, a purple slate roof with a stone ridge, and mutual stone skew to the south. There is a harled, corniced gablehead stack to the north and a similar mutual stack to the south, along with uPVC rainwater goods. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
