5 School Place, Kirkwall

5 School Place in Kirkwall is a house dating from around 1800, with later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey and attic, three-bay, rectangular-plan, symmetrical structure featuring a stepped screen wall that leads to a lean-to addition on the left side (south) and a later flat-roofed entrance vestibule at the ground level on the north side.

On the east, or principal elevation, there is a timber-panelled door with a letterbox fanlight in the central bay of the vestibule, with a window above it on the first floor. Each bay has a window on both floors, and there is a boarded door set wide to the left of the screen wall on the outer left.

The north side elevation has an attic window to the right of the gabled section, which features a gablehead stack above. The south side elevation includes the lean-to addition spanning the ground bays, with an attic window to the right of the gable and a gablehead stack above.

The house has four- and eight-pane timber sash and case windows, a traditional graded stone slate roof, and a corrugated-iron roof on the lean-to. The gablehead stacks are harled and corniced, and there are thack stanes and predominantly cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998. The property is enclosed by low stepped harled boundary walls with timber railings along the east elevation, and harled boundary walls that surround a rectangular-plan garden to the rear (west).
