Description

85, 87, 89, and 91 Victoria Street in Stromness is a house built in the earlier to mid 19th century, with later alterations and additions. It is a 2-storey building, with a single storey, basement, and attic at the rear, featuring a rectangular plan. The interior is subdivided and the ground floor has been converted into shops, situated on a slope that rises to the west. The northeast corner has an oriel window and a stop-chamfered angle on the northwest. There is an arcaded timber porch at the rear entrance. The exterior is cement-rendered and lined, painted on the ground floor to the east, with cement-rendered and lined margins around the openings on the south side.

On the east elevation facing Victoria Street, the bays are divided into a group of three with a lower single bay block to the left. The three-bay section on the right has a window at ground level in the central bay, with a non-aligned window above on the first floor. There is a deep-set modern part-glazed door with a picture window flanking it at ground level in the left bay, and a window above on the first floor. The right bay has a window at ground level and a non-aligned window above. The outer right bay features a window at ground level and a 4-light oriel window on the first floor. The single bay block to the outer left has a deep-set modern part-glazed door with a picture window flanking it on the right, and a non-aligned window above on the first floor.

The west elevation at the rear has a lean-to addition with a cat slide roof on the left side. In the central bay, there is a rectangular-plan arcaded timber-framed porch at ground level, with stone steps leading to a part-glazed boarded door. Each bay has a window flanking the door, with a box dormer above. There is a timber-framed lean-to shed on the outer left.

The south side elevation has a window on each floor, slightly offset to the right of the center, with a multi-flue gablehead stack above.

The building predominantly features 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is modern and made of asbestos, with a stone ridge. The gablehead stacks are cement-rendered and lined with cornices, replaced on the north side, and there are cement skews and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen in 1997.
