Description
118 Victoria Street in Stromness is an early 19th-century building that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey structure with an attic and a rectangular plan, which has been subdivided. The ground floor on the west side has been converted into a shop (number 116), while the upper floors and basement (number 118) serve as a dwelling. The building features a three-bay crow-stepped gable on the west elevation and a four-bay elevation on the south side. The exterior is harled with cement margins around the openings, and the ground floor on the west side is painted cement-rendered and lined. There is a cornice between the ground and first floors on the west side, and the northwest angle is chamfered.
On the west elevation facing Victoria Street, there is a pilastered and corniced doorpiece at the ground level in the central bay, which has a deep-set modern part-glazed door with a rectangular fanlight above it. There are shop windows in each bay flanking the entrance. The first floor has a window on the outer left, and an attic window is set to the right, with a multi-flue gablehead stack above.
The south elevation features a pilastered and corniced doorpiece at the ground level to the right of the centre, with unevenly disposed windows in each bay flanking it. The first floor has four evenly spaced windows.
The east rear elevation is two bays wide, with a modern tilting garage door at the basement level in the left bay. There is a window, including a small attic window, at each floor above, and another window at the ground and first floors in the right bay. A multi-flue gablehead stack is also present.
The building has 16- and 4-pane timber sash and case windows, along with fixed 2-pane shop windows on the west shop front. The roof material is not visible, but there are harled corniced gablehead stacks and uPVC rainwater goods. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997.
