Description

The Bothy is a cottage located on Sunderland's Pier in Stromness, dating from the early to earlier 19th century, with later alterations. It is a single-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan building, symmetrical in design, with its gable end facing the sea. The exterior features roughly coursed rubble that has been re-pointed, an eaves course, and ashlar lintels on the south side, while the east side has cement lintels and timber mullions.

On the south elevation, there is a stone step leading to a modern boarded door located in the central bay, with a window in each of the flanking bays. The east elevation has a slightly recessed tripartite window, which was formerly a door, offset to the left of centre, along with a window to the right and a small attic window above, with a gablehead stack situated above.

The cottage has replacement 12-pane timber sash and case windows, and fixed 8-pane lights in the tripartite window. The roof is covered with stone tiles, featuring a stone ridge, cement skews, and rubble corniced gablehead stacks on both the east and west sides. The property also includes cast-iron rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1997. The quay features Caithness flagstones and a stone flight leading down to the sea to the northeast.
