Description
10 Main Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century house that has undergone some later alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay, rectangular-plan building with a nearly symmetrical design and crow-stepped gables, forming part of a terraced pair. The house features a stop-chamfered southwest angle and is harled with block cills under the windows.
On the west (principal) elevation, there is a deep-set modern part-glazed door at the ground level in the central bay, with a window above it on the first floor. To the right, there is a window on each floor, while the left bay has two closely set windows at the ground level and one window above on the first floor.
The south (side) elevation has a window at the ground level in the left bay and another window on the first floor in the right bay, with a gablehead stack positioned above.
The windows are timber sash and case, with four and two panes. The roof has a rooflight on the west pitch, a grey slate covering, and a stone ridge. The south gable has a corniced stack, while a similar common stack is located on the north side. The property has uPVC rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen during the inspection in 1998.
