Description
The West End Hotel, located at 14 Main Street in Kirkwall, was originally built in 1824 and has undergone later alterations and additions. This three-storey, four-bay building has a near-rectangular plan and features a symmetrical crow-stepped gable. Once a house, it has been converted into a hotel and includes a later cast-iron balcony above the main entrance, which is surrounded by railings on the terrace at ground level. The exterior is harled, with painted plain margins around the openings. The balcony is supported by urn-finialled, fluted columns, and the balustrade features intersecting circles.
On the northwest (principal) elevation, a stone flight of steps leads to two leaf-boarded doors located in a bay that is offset to the right of the center. Above these doors, there is a window on each floor. To the right of the main door, there is a small window at the ground and first floors, along with a deep-set part-glazed door. The outer right bay has a window on each floor, while the two bays to the left of the center also contain a window on each floor. The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a stone ridge, along with harled, corniced gable heads and ridge stacks. The rainwater goods are predominantly made of uPVC.
The interior has been converted for hotel use, and the upper floors were not seen during the last inspection in 1998. Additionally, there are later cast-iron railings surrounding the ground-level terrace.
