Description
24 Main Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building that has been modified from an earlier structure, possibly dating back to 167?. It consists of a pair of two-storey, two-bay houses that form a small terrace, featuring a crow-stepped gable end facing the street, and is harled.
The north gabled elevation has two bays, with a window on the first floor in the left bay and a window on each floor in the right bay, topped by a gablehead stack. The east entrance elevation has three bays (five bays at ground level). The house on the left (south) has a part-glazed timber panelled door with a letterbox fanlight in the right bay at ground level, a window above it on the first floor, and a window in the left bay at ground level. The house on the right (north) has a window in each floor of the centre bay, a timber-panelled door with a letterbox fanlight in the left bay at ground level, and a window above it on the first floor, along with a window in the right bay at ground level.
The north elevation features modern timber hopper windows, while the east elevation has two- and four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes a stone slate easing course, cavetto moulded skewputts (one inscribed 'MH' with a date), a harled, coped vestigial gablehead stack to the north, cast-iron downpipes, and uPVC gutters. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
