25 Main Street, Kirkwall

This building at 25 Main Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century cottage that has undergone later alterations. It is a single storey and attic structure with a T-plan layout, featuring a square-plan, flat-roofed porch on the east side and a lean-to addition at the rear on the north side. It is adjacent to Number 23, which is listed separately.

The south elevation facing Main Street has a deep-set, modern timber door located in the bay to the right, with a window in each of the bays to the left.

On the west side elevation, there is a modern timber door leading to the porch at the internal angle in the center, along with a window in the left return. To the right, there is a window at ground level and a small attic window above, set in a gabled bay that features a gablehead stack. The bay to the left has windows on both floors. Additionally, there is a deep-set modern timber door with a window to the right, leading to the lean-to projection on the outer left.

The building has replacement timber-framed windows with top-hung upper lights. The roof is covered with modern grey slate, while the lean-to has a corrugated-iron roof. The structure features a stone ridge, stone skews, and harled, coped, and corniced gablehead stacks, with uPVC rainwater goods.

The interior was not seen during the inspection in 1998.
