Description

28 Main Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building that incorporates earlier materials and has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey and attic small terrace consisting of three houses, each with three bays, and features a two-bay gabled end facing the street. The gableted dormer window on Number 28 breaks the eaves and the exterior is harled.

On the north gabled elevation, there is a window on each floor in the left bay, with an attic window in the right bay and a gablehead stack above. The west entrance elevation shows Number 28 to the north (left) with a deep-set part-glazed timber door and a rectangular fanlight in the central bay at ground level, along with a small window at the first floor. Each flanking bay has a window on both floors, with a dormer window above. Number 28A in the center has a part-glazed timber door with a rectangular fanlight at ground level and a window above at the first floor, with windows in the flanking bays. Number 28B features a modern part-glazed door in the central bay at ground level and a window above at the first floor, with windows in the flanking bays.

The south gabled elevation includes a window in a flat-roofed addition at ground level, offset to the right, with a gablehead stack above. The building displays a variety of glazing patterns, including 2- and 4-pane timber sash and case windows, as well as timber-framed windows with top-hung upper lights. The roof is covered in grey slate, with stone skews and predominantly uPVC rainwater goods. The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1998.
