Description
2 Wellington Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building that has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey, four-bay rectangular-plan structure that has been divided into two dwellings and is located next to Number 6 Wellington Street, which is listed separately. The exterior is harled, with cement rendering at the rear and cement window cills.
On the north (principal) elevation, the bays are arranged in a 3-1 configuration. There is a deep-set, modern part-glazed door at ground level in the central bay, with a window above it on the first floor. The bay to the left has an identical arrangement, while the outer left and right bays each contain a window on both floors.
The east (side) elevation features two bays, with a window at ground level in the left bay and a window on the first floor in the right bay, which has a gablehead stack above it. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a purple slate roof with a stone ridge, stone skews, and harled, coped gablehead stacks on the east and west sides. The rainwater goods are predominantly uPVC.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
There is also an ancillary building located to the rear (south) of the main block. This single-storey and attic, single-bay, square-plan rubble garage, which may have formerly served as a cart shed and hay loft, features a modern garage door with a boarded door flanking the south elevation and a boarded hay loft door above. It has a grey slate roof with a stone ridge and stone skews.
The boundary walls consist of rubble with a rubble cope surrounding a rectangular-plan garden to the rear (south), and there is a boarded pedestrian gate to the east.
