18 Wellington Street, Kirkwall

18 Wellington Street in Kirkwall is an 18th-century building with later alterations. It is a two-storey, two-bay rectangular-plan small terrace with a gable end facing the street to the north. The terrace consists of a two-bay house (Number 20) on the street side, which is slightly lower than the adjacent two-bay house with a crow-stepped gable to the south (Number 18). There is a narrow close running along the east side of the property. The exterior is harled, with cement margins around the ground floor openings of Number 20.

On the north elevation facing Wellington Street, there is a window on each floor and a gablehead stack above. The west elevation, which serves as the entrance, features Number 20 on the right with a deep-set door in the central bay and a window in the left bay. Number 18 has a part-glazed door in the bay to the left of centre and a non-aligned window in the bay to the right.

The south elevation has an enlarged window in the left bay at ground level, with a window above it on the first floor. There is also a window in the right bay on the first floor. The building displays a variety of glazing patterns, including 14-pane timber sash and case windows in Number 20, while the other windows are predominantly timber-framed with top-hung upper lights. The roof is covered with modern grey slate and features a stone ridge, a harled corniced gablehead stack to the north, a thack-stane, and a similar stack on the east pitch of Number 18. The property also has uPVC rainwater goods.
