Description

The Almont Hotel, located at 39 Charlotte Street in Ayr, was built in 1865 and has undergone later alterations. It is a two-storey and attic hotel with three bays, situated on a corner site. The exterior is made of painted coursed rubble and features a central band course, cornice, and blocking course. The window openings have architraves and cill blocks.

On the north elevation, there is a central doorpiece with pilasters and a cornice, featuring a timber door and a letterbox fanlight. Above this, there is a single window aligned with the first floor. The flanking bays have regular fenestration.

The west elevation, facing Queen's Terrace, has six bays arranged in a 3-1-2 grouping. The main three-bay gable on the left has regular fenestration on both the ground and first floors, with two single windows in the attic. To the right, there is an advanced single bay that is a later two-storey extension, which includes broad timber eaves, a tripartite round-arched window at the ground floor, and a tripartite window at the first floor, along with timber bracketed eaves. There is a pedimented entrance and a single window in the two outer right bays, featuring a two-leaf timber glazed door.

The windows are predominantly 8-pane timber sash and case, with 4-pane windows in the attic on the west elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate and includes rooflights, a corniced stack, and circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998. The property is enclosed by a painted coped rubble boundary wall, which includes a wall-mounted postbox to the outer left of the north elevation.
