Description
The Crown Hotel, located at 54 High Street in Peebles, dates from the earlier to mid-19th century. This two-storey, five-bay hotel features gabled extensions at the rear. The front is constructed from whinstone rubble that is rendered and lined, while the rear is finished in pebble-dash. The building has a base course, raised margins, and exposed rafters.
On the south (front) elevation, the bays are closely grouped, with a pilastered and corniced doorway at the center, which includes a plate glass fanlight. The windows are arranged in a regular pattern, with a secondary doorway to the outer right and two outer windows on the first floor that are blinded. There are also two canted dormers.
The north (rear) elevation showcases a variety of gabled and two-storey additions. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is made of purple and grey slate, featuring metal flashings, and there is an ashlar skew and mutual stack to the west, complete with thack stane.
The interior was not seen in 1994.
