Description
This building is a former cinema located at 60 High Street in Peebles, designed by Alister G Macdonald and constructed between 1932 and 1933. It is a two-storey, three-bay Art Deco structure, featuring a modern shopfront infill at the entrance and smooth render painted with grey harl on the rear.
The front elevation is framed by shallow paired pilasters that have channelled bases and volute capitals. It has a stepped parapet with a blocking course. The ground floor has a wide opening, which is now filled with a modern shopfront and includes a projecting fascia. On the first floor, there are three windows with recessed aprons, separated by stylised moulded pilasters that extend to break the eaves. The windows feature stylised block keystones that rise from the lintels to the eaves line at the centre.
The rear elevation consists of a large rectangular flat-roofed extension that is harled. The building also has timber sash and case windows with four-pane glazing. The interior was not seen in 1994.
