Description
50 High Street in Peebles is a three-storey, four-bay Free Baronial house built in 1877, featuring shops on the ground floor and a pend opening. The front is made of cream sandstone ashlar, while the rear is constructed from harl and whinstone rubble. The building has stop-roll-moulded reveals and bracketed cills at the first floor. The second floor jetties out on a moulded and crenellated course, adorned with mock cannon spouts. The windows on the second floor break the eaves and are topped with finialled and scrolled pediments in a 17th-century style, along with an eaves cornice.
On the south (front) elevation, there is a pend opening to the outer right, featuring a wrought-iron fitting for a hanging sign above. The shopfronts to the outer left and center have been altered and are framed by scrolled brackets topped with a shell motif. The shop to the left includes a panelled door and a slender column with a foliate capital. The first and second floors have regular fenestration. On the outer right of the second floor, there is a wall-mounted sundial inscribed with 'Greenwich Solar Time' and dated 1877.
The north (rear) elevation features a harled gabled extension. The building has four-pane timber sash and case windows, a green slate roof with metal flashings, and corniced apex stacks. The ashlar skews are complemented by corbelled skewputts. The interior was not seen in 1994.
