Description
26 and 28 High Street in Peebles is a late 18th century building, dated 1790 at the rear, and possibly includes earlier fragments. It is a three-storey, three-bay house featuring a rectangular stairwell at the back and a 19th century shopfront. The structure is likely constructed from whinstone rubble with pebbledash render, except for the stairwell, and has a banded cill course at the first floor.
The front elevation showcases a well-preserved late 19th century timber shopfront, complete with moulded brackets supporting the fascia and glazed ingoes. The pend opening to the outer right has chamfered reveals, and the upper floors display regular fenestration.
On the rear elevation, the rectangular stairwell is located to the outer left, and there is a first-floor window with a carved date of 1790 on the lintel. To the right, there is a small single-storey brick infill.
The windows consist of 12-pane timber sash and case windows, along with 12-pane fixed windows in the stairwell. The roof is covered with purple slate and features substantial brick apex stacks.
Inside, the 19th century shop includes built-in timber and glass cabinets. The remainder of the interior was not seen in 1994. Notably, there is a vault beneath No. 28 that was briefly used as a prison in the 18th century.
