Description
The County Hotel in Peebles is possibly from the late 18th century, with a core dating back to the 16th or 17th century, and features a mid-19th century addition. This three-storey, four-bay hotel has a columned doorway and a central gablet, along with a three-storey, two-bay bar and pend to the west.
The building is constructed of whinstone rubble, which is rendered at the front to resemble ashlar. It has a base course and architraved windows.
On the north (front) elevation, the original hotel features a columned doorway located in the bay to the right of the centre. The ground and first floors of the outer right bay have tripartite windows with narrow sidelights, which were altered in the earlier 19th century. The remaining bays have regular fenestration, with a raised margin on the outer left. The wallhead is raised at the centre, forming a gable. The later block to the right has an arched pend and an altered entrance to the bar on the left, with windows on the upper floors of each bay featuring bracketed cills and stop-chamfered arrises. The second-floor windows are depressed-arched, and there is a cornice and blocking course above.
The south (rear) elevation is obscured by later additions. It includes sash and case windows, with plate glass and small-pane tripartite windows, and 4-pane windows in the addition. The roof is covered with purple slates, and it has moulded eaves gutters and gutterheads. The original hotel has no stacks, while the later block features ashlar-coped skews and stacks.
Inside, there is a barrel-vaulted room on the lower ground floor to the east.
