Description
The White Swan Hotel, located at 31, 32, 33, and 34 Market Square in Duns, is a group of two distinct buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, designed in an L-plan. Both buildings are constructed of rubble with white painted dry-dash facing the square, and there is an additional block at the rear.
The hotel building, primarily from the 18th century with later alterations, features four irregular bays and three storeys. Each bay has windows on all floors, with the left bay showcasing a modern flat-roofed glazed porch. The centre left bay has a canted window on the ground and first floors, adjacent to the porch, complete with a parapet and cast-iron balustrading. The centre right bay is blank on the first floor, while the windows on the second floor are smaller. The west elevation presents a blank gable, and there is a three-storey rubble and dry-dash accommodation block that adjoins at the northwest corner. The rear elevation is irregular.
The hotel has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows on the ground floor and plate glass above. The roof is covered with grey slates and features ashlar coped skews.
The public bar, built in the early 19th century, is a two-storey and attic structure with three bays. It has a base course and a band course above the ground level, with regular fenestration. The east elevation consists of three broadly spaced bays, with the centre bay containing a panelled door at the ground level flanked by a pair of windows, a window at the first floor, and a gable with a pediment. The outer bays have single windows at the ground level and tripartite windows at the first floor.
The south elevation features a two-bay gable, with a window in each bay on both floors, larger at the ground level. There is also a small round-headed window in the gable. The windows are timber sash and case, with 12-pane windows on the ground floor (fixed 18-pane on the south) and plate glass on the first floor. The roof is covered with grey slates, has ashlar coped skews, and includes a brick stack.
