Description
The Northern Rock Building Society and Offices, located at 36 and 37 Market Square in Duns, is a former bank built in the later 19th century. This two-storey, four-bay structure features squared, snecked, and stugged cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. It has a base course, a moulded cill course at the first floor, and an entablature with a dentilled cornice. The building includes channelled corner pilasters, raised margins at the ground level with moulded arrises and consoled cornices, and bracketed cills for the windows. The first-floor windows have moulded, lugged architraves. All elevations are symmetrical with regular window arrangements.
On the north elevation, there are four bays with carved and panelled oak doors, which feature 9-pane fanlights in the outer bays. The west elevation has two bays, with the left window on the first floor being blind. The south elevation also has four bays, with the centre left window on the first floor being blind as well.
The first-floor windows are timber sash and case with a 2-pane upper sash, while the ground floor features early 20th century border-glazed windows that correspond to the doors. The building has a piended roof covered in grey slates, with corniced ashlar stacks topped with octagonal cans. It also includes cast-iron rainwater heads and downpipes. The interior was not seen in 1994.
