Description

The Clydesdale Bank, located at 73-77 Main Street in Bothwell, is a late 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay (seven-bay at ground) bank building featuring classical architectural details. The ground floor is constructed of polished red sandstone ashlar, while the first floor and sides are finished with stugged red sandstone ashlar and polished dressings. The building includes a base course, a frieze with a modern fascia, and a dentilled cornice that is consoled at the center between the ground and first floors. A cill course is present at the first floor, along with a dentilled cornice above the three-light canted windows. The center window is consoled and corniced, and the building is topped with a string course, a dentilled cornice, and a coped parapet that features an open fret section at the center.

The north elevation facing Main Street has a deep-set round-arched doorway flanked by polished granite Corinthian columns in the central bay. This entrance features two-leaf timber panelled doors with a round-arched fanlight and a modern glazed vestibule door, with a single window above on the first floor. Each bay has a window at ground level, with a three-light canted window above in the first floor. Additionally, there are deep-set, basket-arched doorways with two-leaf timber-panelled doors, rectangular fanlights, and modern vestibule doors at the ground level in the outer left and right bays.

The ground floor windows are modified two-pane timber sash and case windows, while the first floor features standard two-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is not visible from the street, but there are ashlar coped stacks on the east and west wallheads and at the rear angles, including a tall stack to the right of center with polygonal cans. The rainwater goods are not visible.
