Description

Russell Memorial Hall, located on The Glebe in Bothwell, dates to approximately 1906, with subsequent alterations and additions to the sides and rear. Originally built as an L-plan hall with gabled and buttressed elevations, it features pointed-arched, flowing loop details around the windows and a timber cupola. A short arm is set back to the south. The building is constructed from stugged and snecked red sandstone with polished ashlar dressings. Distinctive features include a base course, cill course, and an ashlar band course. The title block is raised and stepped, topped with a coped design and a carved inscription reading "RUSSELL MEMORIAL HALL" forming the pediment base. The gablehead incorporates an empty two-centred arched niche with a hood mould, and stepped blocks at the gable skew apexes. Window surrounds are chamfered and feature pointed-arched hood-moulds, with long and short quoins at the rear.

The west (principal) elevation has a single bay, with a lean-to addition to the south. A pointed-arched, traceried window is centrally positioned, flanked by buttresses set back from the angles. A window is positioned to the left of the centre within the lean-to addition. The south (entrance) elevation is irregular, with ten bays grouped as 6-2-2. A lean-to addition extends from the re-entrant angle, featuring a modern door on the right and five regularly spaced windows to the left. The advanced, two-bay short arm of the L-plan features pointed-arched, traceried windows in each bay, flanked and divided by three aproned buttresses. The gablehead is slightly recessed, mirroring the design at the front. A two-bay addition extends to the outer right, with a gabled bay offset. A timber-panelled door is set within a chamfered and quoined surround in the left bay, and a bipartite window sits beneath the gable in the right bay.

The north (side) elevation is five bays wide, with a gabled addition to the outer left. It features a three-light, pointed-arched window with a segmental-arched moulded surround in each bay, with an aproned buttress between each. Two openings are blocked within the gabled addition. The east (rear) elevation includes a three-sided projection with a polygonal roof to the right of the centre, featuring bipartites on each side. A brick pitched-roof addition extends from the rear, along with a further lean-to addition to the left of the centre. A tall rendered stack is located to the outer left.

Glazing patterns vary, including some leaded stained glass on the south side, alongside modern aluminium casements in the additions. The roof is covered in grey slate, with modern roofing material on the additions. The skews are coped, and the rainwater goods are cast iron with broad crenellated hoppers. The interior was not inspected in 2000. The gate piers and boundary walls have been replaced with square-plan sandstone piers featuring chamfered square caps. Low, stugged sandstone walls have a ridged ashlar cope, with simple cast-iron railings displaying regularly spaced trefoil motifs.
