Description
The Manse, located at 7 Fairyknowe Gardens, Bothwell, is a house dating from around 1802, with subsequent alterations and additions made over time. It is a near-symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay rectangular building exhibiting Italianate detailing. A two-storey, two-bay addition with a piended roof extends from the rear, and later canted and square bays have been added to the front.
The house is largely constructed of pink ashlar sandstone, with squared sandstone rubble to the sides and rear. The detailing consists of polished ashlar dressings, a base course, a string course, a cornice, a Vitruvian scroll parapet above the ground floor openings, an eaves course, and deep timber brackets supporting the eaves. Windows have chamfered mullions and surrounds, and there are long and short quoins.
The southwest (principal) elevation features a raised doorpiece centrally located at ground level, consisting of a channelled, chamfered round arch with a keystone, set within a square pilastered frame with carved spandrels, a plain frieze, a cornice, and steps leading to a replaced timber panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight. A three-light square bay is positioned to the right at ground level, with a bipartite window above it. A four-light canted bay is also present to the right, with another bipartite window above.
The northeast (rear) elevation includes an advanced wing set to the left of centre with a replaced part-glazed door. A small window is located at ground level adjacent to the re-entrant angle.
The southeast (side) elevation displays an irregular three-bay arrangement with a two-bay addition set back to the right. The northwest (side) elevation presents a regular two-bay arrangement with a two-bay addition set back to the left.
The majority of windows are timber sash and case, featuring two and four panes. A fixed, leaded stair window is at the rear. The roof is grey slate, with a piend-and-platform design, and grey slate to the rear wing. Tall ashlar ridge stacks with bracketed cornices are present, along with ashlar coped stacks at the northeast (rear) wallhead, and a tall harled stack to the rear wallhead of the addition. Cast-iron rainwater goods are in place, with some uPVC replacements at the rear.
The interior was not inspected during a 1997 survey.
An outbuilding is situated to the rear (northeast) of the main house. It is a pitched, gable-ended rectangular structure with modern glazed and timbered lean-to additions to the front (southwest) and left (northwest), and modern fascias on the entrance bay to the outer left and the long bay to the right. The outbuilding is constructed from stugged and coursed pink sandstone.
Gatepiers and boundary walls are located to the southeast of the main house, consisting of square-plan ashlar sandstone piers with flat, square caps, alongside stugged sandstone walls with a flat ashlar cope and replacement painted wrought iron gates.
