Description
The Joanne Baillie Monument, located southeast of Bothwell Parish Church, was built around 1899. This square-plan monument features an arcaded moulded and cast Italianate design, raised on a polished granite plinth. It is made of red Doultonware and has large, framed mosaic panels on each side. At each corner, there is a free-standing barleysugar Corinthian column that supports a round arch, standing on advanced square plinths adorned with foliate panels. Between these columns are slightly recessed foliate rectangular panels, and there is a cornice between the plinth and the column. The monument also features foliate spandrels and a floral and foliate frieze below the cornice. The ogee roof is topped with Doultonware blocked tiles and has a seated cherub at each corner, along with a tall foliate finial. Each elevation includes a roundel with an inscription and a foliate border, depicting a portrait of Joanna Baillie, Bothwell Castle, two cherubs, and fruit trees.
