Description
The Bridge Street Methodist Church, dated 1864, is constructed of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and has a hipped slate roof. It is an example of the Italianate style. The church has a plinth and eaves band.
The two-storey, three-by-six windowed west front features a first-floor band and moulded cornice with a pierced balustrade and corner pedestals topped with urns. A recessed central bay has a portico in antis with two columns and pilasters supporting Corinthian capitals. Segment-headed double doors are located on either side of the portico. Above the doors, a round-arched triple window is ornamented with polychrome detailing, a hoodmould, and a central keystone. The cornice is dated 1864 in Roman numerals. Side bays have rusticated pilasters with scroll brackets to the cornice. The ground floor has single round-arched windows with polychrome heads, keystones and hoodmoulds, and below these are triangular-headed windows with hoodmoulds.
The returns of the building feature similar single windows on each floor. The east end has a central projection with a lean-to roof and a central gable containing a round window. Flanking this are single round-headed windows.
The interior features a moulded cornice and a cross beam ceiling with oval ventilators. A panelled gallery, curved at the rear and incorporating fleurons and a dentillated top edge, is supported by twisted cast-iron columns with composite capitals. There are two doors at each end of the gallery, with the rear doors featuring cornices. A front, enriched panelled choir gallery is situated on cast-iron brackets. Above this is a panelled elliptical arch with enriched spandrels and panelled pilasters with composite capitals, framing a central round window flanked by single round-headed windows. A central stained-glass window is located at the rear, with a triple round-headed window flanked by similar single windows above it. The ground floor has stained-glass windows dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the gallery side windows contain stained-glass memorial panels. Entrance lobbies have wooden dogleg stairs with stick balusters and ramped handrails, with double doors leading to the gallery.
The church contains a circular rostrum with an ornate cast-iron railing and a square wooden pulpit on a tapered wooden base flanked by square pedestals with Ionic corner columns and ornate cast-iron railing. Bronze war memorial plaques are affixed to the front of each pedestal under a wooden pediment, and there is a matching communion table. Box pews are located throughout the building.
Memorials include a relocated marble tablet, dated 1818, and six small brasses and tablets.
