Description

This is an earlier to mid 19th century house with later alterations, situated in Bothwell. It is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay building, accompanied by a single-storey, one-bay wing to the right. A rectangular-plan, pitched-roof laundry house is located at the rear.

The house is constructed from polished ashlar sandstone, with stugged sandstone used on the sides, rear, and laundry. Polished ashlar dressings are present throughout. Architectural details include a base course, eaves course, and cornice. Windows have raised, painted and moulded margins with cornices to the ground floor, and strip quoins are visible on the rear elevation.

The east-facing principal elevation features a raised, pilastered doorpiece with a plain frieze, cornice and blocking course. Steps, flanked by low walls, lead up to a recessed, two-leaf timber panelled door with a rectangular fanlight above. There is a window at first floor level above the door, and a window in each bay on both floors. The wing to the right also has a window.

The west-facing rear elevation is symmetrical, with three bays and a single-bay wing to the left. A blank connecting block, featuring a small barred window on the right flank, joins the centre bay to the laundry block. The laundry block is set at right angles, with windows in each gabled end and decorative octagonal stacks at each apex. There is a blinded window to the west face, and a stair window to the main block above. Windows are present on both floors in each bay, and there's a smaller window with a small opening to the right flank of the wing to the left.

The south-facing side elevation has a gabled end wall with windows on each floor to the outer right, and a gablehead stack above. The north-facing side elevation features a blocked door in the centre of the single-storey wing at ground level, a replacement door to the right, and a window to the left. A blank gable end wall sits above, with a redundant gablehead stack.

The windows are timber sash and case, with four and eight panes (a single two-pane window is on the rear), some with casements to the laundry. The roof is covered in grey slate, with slate also covering the laundry and connecting block, while the wing has modern roofing. A repaired ashlar coped stack is present on the south side, and a redundant one on the north. Coped skews are visible on both the main house and the laundry, along with bracketed skewputts to the laundry. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present with some uPVC replacements to the rear.

The interior was not inspected in 1997.

Sandstone boundary walls and gate piers, with a string course, cornice and square cap, enclose the property. The walls have a curved ashlar cope.
