Description
Fairfield House is a mid-19th century villa built on a sloping site, with a two-bay wing projecting from the north west angle and a later lean-to conservatory on the south side. The front elevation is of painted, polished and coursed sandstone, while the sides and rear are of painted stugged sandstone. A base course, a band course between the ground and first floors, eaves course, cornice and blocking course are all visible.
The west (principal) elevation features an advanced Doric porch with fluted columns, a triglyph frieze and a dentilled cornice. A plain, pilastered doorway leads to a timber panelled door with a rectangular fanlight; a single window sits above at the first floor level. Shallow bipartite bays are present at ground level, with bipartite windows above at both ground and first floor levels flanking the entrance. The wing is set back to the left and incorporates a modern glazed porch and a timber panelled door.
The rear (east) elevation is two-storeys with a basement, and features a three-bay arrangement with a single-storey, basement-level projecting wing to the north. Irregularly placed windows feature on the left return. A canted bay at the centre is marked by paired, round-arched windows at ground level with a stair window above. The full-height canted bays flanking the centre also feature three-light windows on both floors.
The south side is irregular, with a lean-to conservatory on the right at ground level. A first-floor window is centrally placed, with a wallhead stack above. Another first-floor window is located in the outer right bay. The north side has a single bay, with a five-bay wing projecting to the rear. A bipartite window is found on the first floor of the main block, with a wallhead stack above. A wide garage opening, flanked by boarded doors and with irregular fenestration above, is visible on the wing.
The house has predominantly two-pane timber sash and case windows, with eight- and four-pane sash and case windows to the sides and rear. The roof is grey slate, with slate covering the projection, painted ashlar coped stacks with polygonal cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior, partially viewed in 1997, includes a pilastered and partly glazed vestibule door, encaustic tiles, a deep cornice to the vestibule, cornices, and shutters in the principal front rooms.
Sandstone rubble boundary walls with squared ashlar coping stones enclose the property. Gatepiers, originally set wide at the entrance to the drive, are now divided by Fairfield Place. These are square-plan, pink ashlar sandstone with a cornice and square cap. Low garden walls of stugged and coursed ashlar sandstone with a ridged, square cope enclose the garden, along with painted, low, square-plan gatepiers with truncated, flattened pyramidal caps and decorative wrought iron gates.
