42, 43 Market Square, Duns

This building, located at 42 and 43 Market Square in Duns, is an early 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay house with a shop on the ground floor situated on a corner site. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar, with a rendered section on the south side. It features a base course and a band course above the ground floor, with a regular arrangement of windows.

On the east elevation, the building is three bays wide and has a gabled roof framed by giant pilasters. The shop at ground level includes three round-headed openings set within a rusticated surround, with a panelled and glazed door in the center flanked by plate glass windows. The windows on the upper floors are blind. A town clock is positioned in the gablehead.

The south elevation also has three bays, featuring a central doorpiece with Tuscan Doric pilasters, a panelled door, and a decorative multi-pane fanlight. There is a giant corner pilaster to the right. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, ashlar coped skews, and a brick stack.
