Description
50 and 51 Market Square in Duns is an early 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay house situated on a corner site, featuring a shop on the ground floor. The building is constructed from coursed cream sandstone with ashlar dressings, while the ground floor is rendered and painted with raised painted margins. It has a base course, a band course or fascia above the ground floor, and a cill course, with regular window arrangements.
The north (front) elevation has three closely spaced bays and is topped with an open pediment supported by kneelers, featuring an apex stack. The ground floor shop includes a glazed door with a fanlight to the right, a large plate glass shop window to the left, and a smaller plate glass window to the right. The left bay of the upper floors has blind windows.
The east elevation consists of two bays; the left bay has a door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight at ground level and blind windows on the upper floors, while the right bay features a plate glass shop window at ground level.
The south (rear) elevation is irregular with two bays. The windows throughout are timber sash and case with plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slates, has ashlar coped skews, and features brick stacks at the apex.
