Description

57 Market Square is a late 19th-century, three-storey L-plan house that features shops on the ground floor, situated on a corner site. The building is constructed from coursed stugged cream sandstone with polished dressings, while the rear is made of rubble.

On the northeast elevation facing Murray Street, the building has a two-bay design with five-bay polished ashlar shopfronts at ground level. The shops have a base course and basket-arched openings with moulded angles, along with a fascia and a moulded cill course on the first floor. There are two-leaf panelled doors in the second and fourth bays (one of which is blocked) with plate glass windows in between. A panelled pilaster is located at the corner. The first floor features round-headed bipartite windows in each bay, and the second floor has bipartite windows that break the eaves, topped with pedimented dormerheads. The eaves are moulded.

The northwest elevation facing Market Square has a broad left bay that mirrors the details of the northeast elevation, with a single shop window positioned to the left between panelled pilasters. The ground level features a chamfered angle that is corbelled to a square at the fascia. To the right, there are four bays set back, with the left bay containing a panelled door and a plate glass letterbox fanlight, and a pedimented overdoor supported by brackets. Each bay on the upper floors has a window.

The southeast elevation has four bays, with a window in each bay on the upper floors. The southwest elevation is a blank gable on the right side.

The building features timber sash and case windows, with four horizontal panes on the first floor and three horizontal panes on the second floor at the front, while the rear has 12-pane windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are ashlar coped stacks along with corniced brick apex stacks that have ashlar bases.
