Description
49 Market Square in Duns is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay house with a shop on the ground floor. It stands taller and slightly proud of the adjacent No 47. The building is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar and features a base course, a full entablature at the ground level, a cornice, and long and short rusticated quoins. The windows are regularly arranged, with the first-floor windows having architraves, although the central window is blind. The ground floor has five bays that are evenly spaced and divided by ashlar strips, with a three-bay shop on the right. This shop includes a central two-leaf panelled door flanked by plate glass shop windows, and to the left, there is a deep-set panelled door with a two-pane letterbox fanlight and a fixed nine-pane window.
The rear elevation is irregular and extended. The building features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofing, ashlar coped skews, and rendered corniced apex stacks.
