Description
7 and 8 Market Square in Duns is an early 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay house that includes a shop on the ground floor. The building is constructed from stugged and coursed cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. It features a base course, a band course above the ground floor, a dentilled cornice, and flanking giant panelled pilasters. The front has raised margins and regular fenestration.
To the right, there is a massive pilastered Tuscan Doric doorpiece with a dentilled cornice, leading to a deep-set panelled door with a decorative rectangular fanlight. The left side has a three-bay ashlar shopfront, which includes a glazed door with a rectangular fanlight that has decorative radial glazing, flanked by tall plate glass windows that echo the fanlight's motif.
The upper floors have a window in each bay, with the first-floor windows being taller. There are glazed blind windows in the center. The front elevation has a blank return to the south, which meets number 6 and features a boarded door with a four-pane letterbox fanlight at the ground level. The rear elevation is made of rubble and has a four-bay design with a modern harled extension at ground level, along with a stair window in the inner left bay.
The front is adorned with 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates and has ashlar coped skews, with mutual stacks made of ashlar to the north and brick to the south.
