Description

The Old Parish Church Halls, located at 6 Church Square in Duns, date from the late 18th century, with earlier and later additions from the 19th century. This two-storey, three-bay T-plan building features a hall that is attached to the parish church, which is situated to the southwest. The original house is harled with ashlar margins, while the later additions are made of dressed cream sandstone with ashlar dressings.

On the southeast elevation, the original house is two storeys high with three bays and regular window arrangement. There is a blind window to the right at ground level. To the left, the gable of the hall abuts the church, featuring a quadripartite window at ground level and a narrow slit in the gablehead.

The east elevation shows the gable of the house to the left, with a tall projecting piend-roofed French window at the centre, which has chamfered angles at ground level. To the right, there is an advanced blank half-gable from a later lean-to addition.

On the north elevation, the original house has a projecting square stair tower at the centre, which is largely obscured by a later irregular single-storey range at ground level. To the left, there is a two-bay harl-pointed range with a deep-set boarded door and a letterbox fanlight, along with a window to the left. The centre and right sections feature two projecting sandstone bays with bipartite windows. To the far right, the gable of the hall includes a quadripartite window and a blind slit in the gablehead.

The west elevation consists of three bays of the hall. The slightly advanced gable to the right is obscured by a later porch at ground level, which is part of the church and hall. It features a narrow window and a blind slit in the gablehead. The two bays to the left have a truncated projecting stack at the centre, with a quadripartite window to the right and a tripartite window to the left.

The building includes a variety of timber sash and case windows, ashlar coped skews, rendered rebuilt brick stacks, and grey slates. The hall has plate glass casements, sawtooth skews, corbelled gablet skewputts, and finials.

Inside, the interior is very plain, with halls that have suspended ceilings. The first floor of the former schoolhouse is currently derelict.
