Description

The Howie Premises, located at 6 Market Square in Duns, is an early 19th-century three-storey, three-bay house. The exterior features stugged render that is lined to resemble ashlar with raised margins, while the sides are harled and the rear is harl-pointed.

On the west elevation facing Market Square, there are long and short dressings and a base course. The ground floor includes a panelled and glazed door with a letterbox fanlight set within a chamfered architrave topped by a Tudor hoodmould. To the left, there is a large plate glass shop window, and a window is positioned to the right. Each bay of the upper floors has a window, with the second floor windows being smaller and set hard under the eaves.

The south elevation features a gable with small windows, one located to the right on the ground floor and another to the left on the second floor. There is a low screen wall to the right that provides access to the rear.

The east elevation at the rear is irregular with three bays and a shallow bow at the center. To the right, there is a projecting lean-to extension that is pebble-dashed.

The building has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows on the main floors and 4-pane windows on the second floor. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is a brick stack at the apex.
