Description

The Dunlop Trust Hotel, located at 46 Market Square in Duns, is a later 19th-century building featuring two storeys and an attic, with a three-bay design. It is constructed from coursed and stugged cream sandstone ashlar, accented with polished dressings. The hotel’s elevations showcase polished ashlar at the ground level, framed by base and band courses, and feature chamfered arrises and segmental-headed timber dormers.

On the east elevation, which faces Market Square, there is a central two-leaf fielded panelled door flanked by large bipartite plate glass windows. The first floor has three windows with moulded architraves. The corners are marked by rusticated giant pilasters topped with ball finials, and there is a cornice and blocking course that includes a carved plaque reading "DUNLOP TRUST" at the centre. This elevation also has three dormers.

The north elevation, facing Golden Square, consists of four bays. The hotel front is present at the ground level, with the left bay featuring blind windows on both floors and a shouldered wallhead stack. The inner left bay has a blind window at the ground level, a window at the first floor, and a dormer. The two right bays are advanced, with a three-bay shopfront at the ground level that includes a central door flanked by large four-pane shop windows. The first floor has a bipartite window on the right and a single window on the left, along with two dormers.

The south elevation, facing South Street, also has four bays. The left bay features bipartite windows on both floors and a dormer. The centre left bay has a modern glazed door at the ground level and two stair windows above, with the upper section breaking the eaves and corniced. The centre right bay contains closet windows on both floors, while the right bay has a sunken basement window, blind windows on the ground and first floors, and a shouldered wallhead stack.

The building has four-pane timber sash and case windows and mansard roofs covered with grey slates, along with rebuilt and rendered stacks. The interior has been significantly altered.
