Description
4 and 5 Golden Square in Duns is an early 19th-century house with later alterations. It is a two-storey building with an attic and features a shop at ground level on a corner site. The exterior is rendered to resemble ashlar, with stugged detailing on the east side and ashlar dressings.
On the east elevation facing Golden Square, the building has a two-bay design flanked by pilaster strips. The ground floor features a three-bay shopfront with stop-chamfered arrises, where shop windows are positioned beside a central door, topped with a fascia. The first floor has a pair of windows, while the attic includes a central bipartite window that breaks the eaves, complete with a pedimented dormer head, bracketed cills, and a ball finial.
The north elevation features a blank gable on the left and three irregular bays on the right. At the center, there is a deep-set panelled door flanked by windows, with two additional windows on the first floor. A piend-roofed canted timber dormer is also present. The windows are 4-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are ashlar coped skews along with a brick apex stack that has an ashlar base.
