Description

4 and 6 South Street in Duns is a pair of two-storey and attic Z-plan double-fronted flats built in 1890, featuring shops on the ground floor. The building is constructed from cream sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, showcasing raised margins, roll-moulded arrises, and bracketed cills at the first floor.

On the South Street elevation, the ground floor is made of coursed stugged ashlar that is polished, with a base course and eaves. The southeast corner is rounded, with corbelling above the first-floor windows. The ground floor includes a three-bay shop with two-leaf fielded panelled doors flanked by large plate glass shop windows. To the left, there is a panelled door with a letterbox fanlight leading to the flat. There is also a shop window on the eastern return. At the first floor, there is a pair of windows at the front divided by a corbelled stack, along with a narrow window on the return.

The building features a mansard roof with a pair of segmental-headed timber dormers flanking a curvilinear gable, from which the stack has been removed. A similar gable is present on the eastern return, and the stack bears the date 1890.

On the Golden Square elevation, the building is made of squared and snecked sandstone, with segmental-pedimented timber dormers. To the north, there are three closely spaced bays on the ground floor, which include a panelled and glazed shop door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight to the left, a plate glass shop window in the center, and a 12-pane window to the right. There are two windows at the first floor and a dormer.

On the eastern side, there is a panelled door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight to the left, plain two-leaf boarded doors in the center, and a door to the right. This elevation also has two windows at the first floor and a dormer.

The building features timber sash and case windows, with four panes on the South Street side and twelve panes on the Golden Square side (with plate glass dormers). The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are brick stacks with octagonal cans. A moulded iron gutter runs along the South Street elevation.
